The Upayanam or sacred Thread TWICE BORN ceremony of the Brahmins has lost all significance. It just seems to be now done as a custom with a sentiment of the high brow and little relevance to what it signifies.
The HINDU SYSTEM of Caste still causes friction in Hindu heartland of North India and elsewhere and it is not unusual to read about violence between castes or couples being killed in inter caste love marriages.
The Caste system is one of the most dubious intuition of the Hindus and historically been a most abused hereditary practice when in sentiments from the Vedic era it was not on birth but by occupation or Karma.
According to Manu one of the authorities on the caste system, Caste is determined by Tapas, Shrutum and Yoni (individual meditation and penance, Cultural upbringing and education and hereditary) It is apparent throughout the Vedic faith including Lord Krishna from the Epic era stating that Caste is determined not by birth but by Karma or occupation. . The caste system or rightly Varna system was classified by the four castes namely Brahmin Caste which is ignorantly referred to as the BRAHMAN CASTE or priestly educated caste !!! KSHATRIYA CASTE or the warrior caste, the Vaishya Caste or the business man and the Shudra Caste or the untouchable, blind manual help.
They are four ages to the Vedic faith namely Vedic period which was the time of composition of the four Vedas , Epic period or the period of the great epics Ramayana and Mahabharatha ,the Sutra period and the Scholastic s period.
It is clear the original intention of the Caste system was to identify aptitude and not the hereditary practice the present VARNA SYSTEM has started to signify.
The TWICE BORN or Upayanam was relevant when education of our sacred text was promoted by one generation to the next by word of mouth and signifies knowledge and learning.
Today the Brahmin is no longer the privileged caste but like a donkey still practices the TWICE BORN ritual confusing a state of awareness and consciousness to physical attribute of heritage.
It is a fact that over 50 Sulabh Shauchalayas or public toilets in Delhi are looked after by Brahmins. They are all also Coolies or porters in the station and rickshaw pullers.
That is how irrelevant the whole TWICE BORN ritual of an educated Hindu has become.
They are one of the poorest and most maligned Castes in India.
(Did you also know that most rickshaw pullers in Banaras are Brahmins?
This reverse discrimination is also found in bureaucracy and politics. Most of the intellectual Brahmin Tamil class has emigrated outside Tamil Nadu. Only 5 seats out of 600 in the combined UP and Bihar assembly are held by Brahmins(2006) — the rest are in the hands of the Yadavs.
400,000 Brahmins of the Kashmir valley, the once respected Kashmiri Pandits, now live as refugees in their own country, sometimes in refugee camps in Jammu and Delhi in appalling conditions. But who gives a damn about them? Their vote bank is negligible.
And this is not limited to the North alone. 75 per cent of domestic help and cooks in Andhra Pradesh are Brahmins. A study of the Brahmin community in a district in Andhra Pradesh (Brahmins of India by J Radhakrishna, published by Chugh Publications) reveals that today all purohits live below the poverty line.
Eighty per cent of those surveyed stated that their poverty and traditional style of dress and hair (tuft) had made them the butt of ridicule. Financial constraints coupled with the existing system of reservations for the ‘backward classes’ prevented them from providing secular education to their children. ) – http://www.hinduhumanrights.info/brahmins-one-of-the-poorest-and-maligned-castes-in-india/
Over the years they have become a butt of jokes and it is a real pitiable condition that these people still maintain they are BRAHMAN CASTE.
Their ignorance is such that they don’t even know the difference between Brahman or a state of oneness with all existence and Brahmin a caste order of priests in ancient India that helped the kings who were mainly of KSHTRIYA CASTE perform rituals and offer prayers to the Gods.
It ridicules the Caste system and is ironic that the once learned Brahmin of India today cleans toilets.
Nevertheless, the educated Brahmins still carry age old pride from the dark ages of being of superior caste which is ironic for a pantheistic faith that sees the absolute in all forms.
Due to atrocities over the ages of the Brahmin’s of old terrorizing and patronizing lower caste people they came under attack from inside Hinduism itself. It is said in the dark or middle ages if a lower caste person read the Vedas boiling lead was poured into his ears. It is in the backdrop of this reputation that the present condition of these so called Brahmins is pitiable.
The challenged castes of India with reservations and state support seems to have come up the progress ladder and the Brahmin is stuck with his obsession of pedigree and high birth which is a distortion to the original Varna system based on aptitude and is today cleaning toilets !!!
It is true though that the Brahmin community has also produced some of the greatest minds from India may it be Agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan to Chess Ace Vishwanathan Anand but that highlights how relevant Manus interpretation of caste by Tapas individual meditation and penance , Shrutum Cultural upbringing and education and Yoni or hereditary determines a Caste.
It is a insult to the very doctrine of the Varna or Caste system that Brahmin today do manual labor it highlights the ignorance and hypocrisy of this most dubious system THE HINDU CASTE SYSTEM and the TWICE BORN BRAHMIN !
